The OFarrell Twist
August 30th 2008 14:43
Power is a slippery concept in NSW; one day it is acceptable to sell it, on another everyone is against it. Barry O’Farrell has twisted like an opinion in the breeze and finally withdrawn his support for the sale to keep in line with public opinion. Violation of the public interest has been called and gauntlets are down but the power war may already be over.
Some ideas refuse to go away and considering this was an attempt to kick-start the economy it will be a lingerer. The cost of the jumpstart will be higher power prices; this cost-benefit analysis doesn’t appeal to people and now worms are spilling onto the floor.
I’m not going to suggest Barry O’Farrell is a worm lover but his flip-flopping has been timed according to public opinion. This is a man that has compared politicians to supermarket products where appearance is everything. As long as he looks different… This is his New, Improved! energy policy. In the political game this is classic Wedge Play…Consider the idea like a golf-ball on the fairway you can choose to smash it and try to get on the green or you can be a coward that uses a wedge to lay up. Wedge play is the last refuge of the scoundrel.
In the mean time this represents Democracy’s most beatable government: the Iemma bureaucratic bunglers. Such underhand tactics aren’t required, they are counter-productive. Barry O’Farrell could break with haphazard tradition and latch onto the spirit of transformation while it is still a winning concept. I suspect he will play to form and return to support the policy, so I will keep my good eye on him. That’s my promise to you.
