Female Freedom Fighters
October 2nd 2008 13:24
Every week we get further away from Australia’s dark ages and closer to the enlightenment. Recent rumours suggest the army will be removing gender restrictions from combat roles.
Female freedom fighters are common throughout history; Iranian revolution (1905-10), French Resistance, al-Qaeda, Algiers. “Molly Pitcher” worked artillery at Monmouth in 1778 against the Red Coats among others.. Artillery will be the most likely role filled by women. Neil James believed that front-line female fighters would not occur in his lifetime because “When you get people physically fighting each other hand to hand on a daily basis, it’s just not fair to put woman into that situation” Women are free to revolt, just not to free to make a quid doing it.
The moral ramifications are complex; putting women on the front line would mean conceding our moral superiority over al-Qaeda. Since al-Qaeda has started using women as soldiers the moral outrage has been deafening; is this a moral battle we can afford to lose?
