Extreme Make Over: NSW and W.A.
September 9th 2008 16:30
Across every state Labor’s card houses are being destroyed and little card families are becoming refugees at an alarming rate. Democracy can wreck a terrible violence and over the weekend W.A. Labor became the latest casualty.
Every close election breeds conspiracy theories but even if claims of data errors and poor vote handling bear lemons it is lost. Though seats remain in doubt Liberal advances in Riverton and Wanneroo will scupper Labor’s brilliant snap-election plan. Labor will be pulling stops to get to 28 seats which to give them the option of dealing with two independents rather than the Nationals to form government.
Forming a minority government will require orgiastic negotiations with all parties involved in the result. The People have acquired a nice leash and were effective in undermining W.A. Labor’s machinations through their protest vote; brave souls. So everyone wins.
NSW recently enjoyed a resignation and a sacking as Premier Morris Iemma was replaced with Nathan Rees and Michael Costa went down. Barry O’Farrell once said winning government was all about appearances so the ALP (NSW) is attempting an extreme make-over to dupe voters. Only time will tell if they have changed where it matters: on the inside.
